University of Notre Dame is an opportunity on many fronts. The subject matter of Balthazar would be of interest to a wide range of students, scholars, and the broader South Bend community. A parable about a polar bear, rich in imagery and meaning, Balthazar provides readers profound insights into the nature of authority, power, and freedom. Published in 1974, it can also be read as an allegory of the human rights violations committed by the Chilean military dictatorship in the aftermath of the 1973 coup.
