Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick, assistant professor of peace studies at the University of San Diego’s Kroc School of Peace Studies, focuses his research on politics, culture, technology, and social change.

In his latest book, What Slaveholders Think: How Contemporary Perpetrators Rationalize What They Do (Columbia University Press, 2017), he explores how broad political and economic changes upend the status quo for both the powerful and the powerless. His current book project focuses on how social movements use technology.

Choi-Fitzpatrick holds a PhD in sociology from the University of Notre Dame, where he was a Kellogg Dissertation Year Fellow. In the dissertation, he drew on fieldwork in India to explore the impact emancipation from slavery has on slaveholders, the enslaved, and bystanders.

New Book Explores “Wicked Problems” Facing Scholars and Practitioners

The new edited volume "Wicked Problems: The Ethics of Action for Peace, Rights, and Justice" (Oxford University Press, 2022) edited in part by Kellogg faculty fellow Ernesto Verdeja and former Kellogg Dissertation Year Fellow Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick, brings together interdisciplinary authors to explore the ethical questions, dilemmas, and obligations that both activists and academics have to confront in the midst of work to build a more just and peaceful world.
