The Radical Spanish Empire: How Paperwork Politics Remade the New World

Join the Kellogg Institute for a presentation and roundtable discussion of the book The Radical Spanish Empire: How Paperwork Politics Remade the New World with authors Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra, a former Kellogg visiting fellow, and Adrian Masters.

The book offers a groundbreaking account of how non-elite Spanish and Indigenous people, women, enslaved people, and other actors across the Spanish Americas used petitions, lawsuits, complaints, and testimony to challenge conquistadors, friars, native lords, slavery, and other forms of authority.

Cañizares-Esguerra and Masters will introduce the project and discuss its principal arguments and archival discoveries before a roundtable moderated by Kellogg faculty fellow Carlos A. Jáuregui with Felipe Fernández-Armesto, Allison Bigelow, and Joshua Lund. A reception will follow.
