Throughout his junior year, he researched the Arabization and Islamization of the early Middle East with the Notre Dame Medieval Institute. Burkman also assisted Professor Andres Mejia Acosta to determine why executive actors deliberately undermine the political standing of members of their own party in Ecuador as part of the Kellogg Developing Researchers Program.

During the summer of 2025, Burkman traveled to Lincolnshire, England and conducted a qualitative research study to learn more about what has motivated voters in this area of England to vote conservative for over 100 years. His senior thesis will continue the study of voter motivation. Burkman is a fellow of the Notre Dame Democracy Initiative, a leader in the Student International Business Council, a member of the Student Policy Network, and has served on the Judicial Council Elections Committee.
