Oluwatoni Akintola is currently working on a project that examines the importance of high-yield, indivisible investments in semi-urban Uganda, where financial services are limited. Prior research shows that agents in that region face risky, indivisible investment opportunities, and theory suggests that these opportunities are correlated with poverty traps and can predict the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of government financial intervention and poverty programs. Akintola's current project explores the potential implications of this prior research (for example, whether land is simply valued as a substitute among comparable preferences or whether it plays some kind of deeper, more meaningful security role) with a quantitative framework.
