Nicolás Buitrago-Rey is a Colombian Lawyer and J.S.D. Candidate who researches on alternative sanctions in Transitional Justice and human rights reparations in International Law. He earned his LLB from Universidad del Rosario in Colombia, graduated summa cum laude from the LL.M. in International Human Rights Law at Notre Dame Law School, and cum laude from the M.A. in International Studies and the LL.M. in International Law at Universidad de los Andes in Colombia. Mr. Buitrago has worked as a Doctoral Intern at Notre Dame Law School Global Human Rights Clinic, Fellow at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, Intern at the Special Jurisdiction for Peace, Research Associate and Research Assistant at the Notre Dame Reparations Design and Compliance Lab of the Kellogg Institute for International Studies, Visiting Scholar at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, Research Assistant at the Peace Accord Matrix of the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, and Lecturer and Research Assistant in International Law at Universidad del Rosario. His dissertation will examine the impact of international law on the design of alternative sanctions and reparations in transitional justice, using the Colombian Special Jurisdiction for Peace as a case study.
My research interests are Transitional Justice, International Criminal Law, and International Human Rights Law, especially the Inter-American System of Human Rights and Reparations Design and Compliance. My dissertation will study the design of reparations in transitional justice with particular attention to the Colombian Special Jurisdiction for Peace.
