Faculty Fellow Rahul Oka was featured in a Notre Dame "What Would You Fight For?" video. The Anthropology Professor believes there are better approaches to providing aid to the millions of displaced people around the world who find themselves in refugee camps. Along with colleagues in the Department of Anthropology, ICeNSA, and The Ford Family Program, he has examined the evolution of formal and informal economies that have arisen within these camps. His analysis suggests that when refugees can achieve a degree of self-reliancy, they may have significantly better outcomes in the long-term. Professor Oka conducts his research in Kenya at the Kakuma refugee camp, one of the largest refugee camps in the world.
