Alexander Lewis is a senior neuroscience and Spanish major working with Professor Marisel Moreno in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. Lewis is currently working on helping to finalize Professor Moreno’s manuscript for her book Crossing Waters: Undocumented Migration in the Cultural Production of the Hispanophone Caribbean and Its Diaspora. He has previously worked with Professor Moreno on bios, interview transcripts, background research, and proofreading related to the book. This year, he is using his experience in the subject to write a senior thesis centered around access to care in the undocumented Haitian populations of Puerto Rico.

Aside from working with Professor Moreno through the ISP, Lewis is involved in several other activities on campus. He is a proud Resident Assistant in Baumer Hall, a member of the Men’s Club Water Polo team, the Co-President of Notre Dame Model United Nations club, and a psychology research assistant in the Memory, Aging, and Cognition laboratory with Dr. Josh Koen. During summers and breaks Lewis has focused on opportunities through the Center for Social Concerns as well as the Kellogg Institute, having completed an SSLP, two virtual ISSLPs, and multiple other international programs through both centers. Having begun his senior year, he is in the process of applying for teaching and clinical service positions to be completed during a gap year while he applies to medical school after graduation.

Thematic Interests

Lewis is excited by interdisciplinary research in Latino studies, particularly studying literature produced by migrant communities of the Caribbean diaspora. He hopes to couple research in this area with a focus on access to healthcare among migrant communities.

Current Research

Currently, Lewis is excited to be working with Professor Moreno developing a senior thesis studying access to care in undocumented Haitian populations in Puerto Rico. Other recent research tasks include training a new International Scholar, translation of an interview, and putting the finishing touches on Professor Moreno's manuscript.
