Valeria Palanza (PhD, Princeton University), a fall visiting fellow, focuses her research on how executive-legislative power sharing impacts policymaking in Latin America. In her project “Lawmaking in Separation of Powers Systems,” she will expand upon her doctoral dissertation, which examines the choice of legislative instruments and the role of interest groups in the lawmaking process. Using case studies of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Peru, she will look at the recent practice of legislatures delegating decision rights to the executive beyond constitutionally established decree authority and the role of political parties in the choice of legislative instruments. In addition, she will expand empirical testing of her theory of legislative choice. Her work combines game theoretic modeling with econometric analysis of empirical data and with insights gained in interviews in the countries under study.

Palanza was a researcher with the Centro de Estudios para el Desarrollo Institucional (CEDI) before entering graduate school. She coauthored Congreso, Presidencia y Justicia en Argentina (Temas, 1999).
