Cas MuddeCas Mudde

Cas Mudde (PhD, University of Leiden), associate professor of political science at the University of Antwerp, will be an Institute visiting fellow for the 2009–10 academic year. In his project “To the Left? To the Right?  Explaining Populism(s) in Europe and Latin America,” he plans to differentiate and evaluate different types of populism. In particular, he will attempt to explain why right-wing populism has been successful in Europe while left-wing populism dominates Latin America. This fall, he will teach an undergraduate political science class on European politics.

Mudde’s research agenda has centered on the relationship between political extremism and democracy in Europe. The author of Populist Radical Right Parties in Europe (Cambridge University Press, 2007), which was a Choice Outstanding Academic Title and Stein Rokkan Prize winner, and The Ideology of the Extreme Right (Manchester University Press, 2000), he has edited or coedited five books, and published over 25 peer-reviewed journal articles.
