Academic Resources

The Theodore M. Hesburgh Library

The Theodore M. Hesburgh Library has been developed primarily as an undergraduate collection but is in the process of building specialized research holdings, including several areas relevant to themes of the Kellogg Institute. Holdings amount to nearly 2.6 million volumes. With your faculty identity card (see page 4) you will be able to borrow books for extended periods. During the academic year, library hours are 8:00 am–2:00 am, Monday through Friday, 9:00 am–2:00 am on Saturdays, and 1:00 pm–2:00 am on Sundays. These hours vary within the departments of the library. There are shorter hours during vacation periods.

The library has open stacks and users may search out and borrow books themselves. The Library of Congress system is used. The card catalogue is fully computerized and Visiting faculty can access the catalogue through the Notre Dame home page (library.nd.edu) on the Web or use the ALEPH terminals in the main library or the Kellogg/Kroc Information Center. Visitors are offered an informational tour of the library and its services.

On the first floor of the library is the Bibliographic Center, with the combined catalogue to all collections and a range of bibliographic aids, and the Periodical Center, with some 10,000 current issues of serials. The International Studies Resource Center is located on the second floor of the library in Room 213 and houses a growing collection of recent manuscripts, newspaper clippings, and working papers, including material received from other institutions in exchange for the Kellogg Working Papers. Other services that the library provides are a microfilm collection, with readers on the second floor; database searching, with access to a range of computerized bibliographies; and inter-library loan, which makes available books from other libraries around the United States.

The Kellogg/Kroc Information Center (KKIC)

The Kellogg/Kroc Information Center (KKIC), located on the 3rd floor of the Hesburgh Center (318) provides document delivery service to and from the Hesburgh Library and University branch libraries via courier service twice daily. Inter-library loan service is also provided for materials not available at Notre Dame. As a convenience to those working in the Hesburgh Center, the Information Center provides a public computer terminal. The KKIC contains a limited number of reference tools for easy access to basic information; a small current awareness collection of news publications in Spanish, Portuguese, and English; and a collection of working papers and newsletters from or about Latin America. The KKIC also contains a collection of materials on peace and conflict resolution from the Kroc Institute.

Senior Library Specialist Vonda Polega provides trained assistance for bibliographic searches and obtaining library materials. The KKIC’s hours are 1:00 pm– 5:00 pm, Monday–Friday. For more information, see the Center’s website (kkic. library.nd.edu).

A group orientation of the KKIC will be scheduled by Juliana de Sousa Solis and take place after your arrival.
