Computers for Visiting Fellows and Guest Scholars
The Kellogg Institute and the University of Notre Dame offer several different computing services to all visitors, and the Institute will make every effort to accommodate your needs. Although MacIntosh computers will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis, Kellogg visitors are strongly encouraged to bring their own laptop computer or to purchase one while at the Institute. If you will be bringing a laptop computer, the Institute will provide any hardware or software necessary to attach your computer to the University network. You must contact Judy Bartlett, senior systems administrator, prior to attaching your computer to the network. If your computer is not currently protected by antivirus software, McAfee VirusScan will be installed free of charge. Also, it is important that Windows users update their operating system software to ensure that the latest patches have been applied.
The University Solutions Center computer store (oit.nd.edu/store) provides several different brands of computers and software at substantial educational discounts. If you wish to purchase a computer, the Institute will provide assistance regarding recommendations and pricing up to three weeks before your departure. Any required software will be provided free of charge during your stay with the Institute, and if you wish to purchase software for use after your visit, it will be provided at a substantial discount below retail pricing.
Additionally, Kellogg offers on-site technical consulting and minor hardware/software repair at no charge, and the University maintains a fully certified repair center that can handle all warranty and major repair work.
The University provides high-speed, direct Internet access for all offices and residences in the Hesburgh Center. As a visitor to the University, you will receive an Internet e-mail account and one gigabyte of personal storage space on the University’s servers.
If you have your own computer and want to be connected with the Internet, your computer must have an Ethernet card installed. Please do not attempt to use a modem from the residences as the digital phone system may cause damage to your modem. The Kellogg Institute will supply Ethernet cards and cables for your laptop if needed. Additionally, your network settings must be configured to work with the campus connection. The set-up process usually takes 15–20 minutes depending on the type of computer you have. Please contact Judy Bartlett at 1-5102 or jbartlet@nd.edu to arrange an appointment to configure your machine, or if you have any questions regarding connectivity and your computer’s network readiness.
