Locations and Descriptions
The Kellogg Institute for International Studies’ spring internship competition will offer opportunities with organizations in the United States, Africa, Asia and Latin America for summer 2012.
Several sites have internships in many locations. The Kellogg Institute will fund internships in the locations listed next to the organization name on Kellogg Institute internship web pages. If the location is not listed, we will NOT fund internships in that country.

International Sites – Latin America
Center for Microfinance Studies (GVcemf) - São Paulo, Brazil
The Center for Microfinance Studies (GVcemf) is a part of EAESP-FGV, the main business school of Brazil. The creation of the Center as part of a business school was an innovation that enhanced the process of mainstreaming microfinance. The main focus of the Center is the production of applied research in the area of microfinance. Some of the current projects are:
1. “Impact Analysis of Microcredit: the case of Cresol Cooperative”
2.“The role of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) based bank channels in improving microcredit: learning from the Brazilian experience”
3. Microcredit, Social Capital and Community: The case of Jaguare
The projects currently undertaken by the Center are characterized by a mixture between qualitative and quantitative approaches. In practical terms this means fieldwork and direct contact with institutions, regulators and clients. The intern will be part of project 3 (above) whose main objective is to investigate the contribution of the community (Nova Jaguare - in the city of São Paulo), from the economic, social and organizational point of view, for the feasibility and impact of microenterprise credit, mainly the impact related to poverty reduction and social inclusion. The intern is expected to join senior researchers in field missions aiming at applying questionnaires related to the projects purposes. In addition, the intern will help senior researchers analyze the questionnaires and report the main findings. The local partner at Jaguare is the community of the Holy Cross College. Applicants should have advanced knowledge of Portuguese and/or fluency in Spanish and be interested in microfinance and financial inclusion.

New Internship
Coprodeli – Peru
Two internships are available with this organization.
Pachacutec is a shantytown, north of Lima, with a population of 140,000. Insufficient access to basic services of education, healthcare, housing and employment opportunities create cyclical conditions of poverty. Coprodeli battles the core causes of poverty by providing education, health care, employment generation program, humanitarian aid, and other social services. The population of Pachacutec has grown from the diverse cultures of Peru.
Music - Poor families came from near and far bringing with them a wide range of musical traditions. The student intern will research the various musical styles of Peru and then work with
Coprodeli staff to develop a music program that will welcome all traditions and blend them into school music programs as well as into the life of the community.
Theater - Coprodeli is dedicated to the goal of providing opportunities that feed the human spirit through its music and theater programs as well as within the Coprodeli libraries and churches. The theater intern will work alongside Coprodeli staff to produce a summer musical and/or a dramatic play starring local students. They will also work in related theater projects.
While in Peru, student interns will live in the Coprodeli hostel near the girls' orphanage and eat two meals per day with Coprodeli. Applicants should be sophomores or juniors majoring in music or theatre. Proficiency in Spanish required.

Foreign Commercial Service – Argentina
Business majors only
The intern will assist the commercial attaché with gathering and analyzing trade and commercial data about Argentina and US business in Argentina. Duties may include working with American businesspeople to assess business opportunities in Argentina, preparing reports on industrial sectors in Argentina and routine office tasks. Must have US citizenship. Proficiency in Spanish required.

Parceiros da Educação - São Paulo, Brazil
Business and Political Science majors preferred but others considered.
Parceiros da Educação is a non-governmental organization founded 6 years ago by some of the most accomplished business executives in Brazil. As a response to the enormous challenges the Brazilian public educational system faced (and still faces), a group of business executives took action by establishing an organization that promotes and monitors partnerships between private enterprises (companies)/business executives and public schools. The partnership is focused on the implementation of a program (created by educational specialists) that is implemented and monitored by Parceiros da Educação. The program has the mission of improving the quality of the school - measured by student's academic performance - and does so by acting on four different "areas": pedagogical support (focused on teacher training), school management support, community integration, and infra-structure reforms (when needed). The intern will learn firsthand about private-public partnerships - from capturing partners (investors) to how the program works inside schools. Projects will require a business/administrative mindset as the intern engages in research projects related to the needs of the organization. Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in Brazil and have advanced knowledge of Portuguese and/or fluency in Spanish; applicants should be engaged in social issues, public policy, development work, and/or not-for-profits.

New Internship
Un Techo para mi País – Chile
Un Techo para mi País (UTPMP) is a non-profit organization led by university students and young professionals. Through the construction of transitional houses, the organization works with families living in extreme poverty in a social inclusion process that allows them to develop as a sustainable community. This internship is based around three core areas (1) researching and submitting funding applications to donor bodies (2) assist in developing communication materials and (3) working in community. Interns will also be responsible for formulating and seeing through innovative and creative means with which to raise funds. Students applying for this internship should be highly proficient in both English and Spanish, have some experience with translations, and must be proactive, creative and attentive to detail. Upperclassmen with leadership skills preferred.

VivePerú – Peru
Vive Perú is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering understanding of Latin American and Peruvian culture and promoting development in impoverished Peruvian communities. We work to promote cultural understanding and implement innovative and sustainable development programs in the areas of health, education, music, and social work.
Interns will have the choice of working in Trujillo, Pacasmayo or Otuzco, Peru in the areas of health, teaching English, teaching music or social work. More information about each of these areas can be found on their website. Students should indicate on the application the location and area of study in which they prefer to intern.
Applicants should have an intermediate to advanced level of spoken Spanish. (Proficiency in Spanish is required.) This internship is available to current sophomores and juniors.
