International Sites – Africa

Ford Family Program in Human Development and Solidarity - Uganda
AfricaThe Ford Program internship gives students the opportunity to be involved in community-based research that responds to the critical needs of people living in extreme poverty.  Under the direction of David Nnyanzi, Uganda Country Director, interns will work in the villages of Nnindye, Uganda, together with community leaders, local NGOs, local government, and students and faculty of UMU. Nnindye is a community poised for change. With a relatively small external investment of expertise and financial resources, residents are working towards increasing agricultural productivity, improving access to basic health care, safe water, and education, and improving infrastructure that connects people to information and markets. Students will join this effort by conducting surveys, mobilizing communities in the creation and implementation of development projects, and assisting in the monitoring and evaluation of projects already underway or completed. Significant opportunities for interns to continue to be involved upon their return to campus will be available.
LENGTH: 8–10 weeks

Foundation for International Medial Relief of Children, Ambassador Program – Uganda
FIMRC is a nonprofit organization committed to providing primary medical care to children in underserved communities worldwide.  With a focus on assisting the world’s most vulnerable populations, FIMRC has seen unprecedented success in improving the health of children and families in targeted communities around the world.  In addition to providing medical treatment in our clinics, we strive to promote long-term health in the communities we serve through preventative health education initiatives. As part of these projects, volunteers and local medical staff strive to improve the overall health of communities in Uganda, Peru, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Costa Rica.  Volunteers who serve at our clinics will assist the on-site medical staff by helping to distribute medications, instruct patients in proper health practices, conduct house calls, assist with the intake of patients by taking vital statistics and preparing their files, and prepare health education sessions for the community.  We always encourage our volunteers to take the initiative in implementing projects which interest them most. Thus, each volunteer experience is different, with preparations made through the national office in Philadelphia, and then tailored with the Field Operations Manager once on site.  Many participants possess experience in the medical field and an interest in healthcare in the developing world, but these are certainly not necessities! We firmly believe in the capacity for any willing individual to serve and make a difference in the lives of children and families worldwide.

Based at the Center for International Development at Harvard University, WorldTeach offers the benefits of a well-established volunteer organization, while also providing more comprehensive, personalized support and training as a small NGO.  In each of our programs, volunteers are placed in schools and host communities in developing countries that specifically request WorldTeach volunteers and would otherwise be unable to afford or locate qualified teachers.  Volunteers receive training, language preparation, and field support, empowering them to make an impact that will last long after they leave. Notre Dame interns will have the opportunity to serve in schools, engage in local projects, travel with fellow volunteers, and immerse themselves in the life of the community while living with host families or in teacher apartments. Eight-week summer programs are available in China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Namibia.
