Quechua Summer Language Fellowships

The Latin American Studies Program through the Kellogg Institute for International Studies will offer several summer fellowships for summer 2009 to undergraduate and graduate students who would like to pursue the study of Quechua, the language of the Incas and of millions of indigenous peoples living in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Students will attend classes at the Centro Tinku in Cusco, Peru. Classes are available at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be able to attend the 7 week program.
  2. Demonstrate interest in Latin American Studies through coursework, work, or living experience, internships, etc.
  3. Be proficient in Spanish.

Fellowship Details

Recipients of the award receive a small stipend as well as funding to cover airfare, program fees, room and board, and health insurance.

Application

A completed application will include the following:

  • The application form (download form here, or fill out online)

  • Official academic transcript

  • A curriculum vitae

  • A 2-3 page proposal explaining your interest in Latin America, your specific reasons for wanting to pursue the study of Quechua, and how Quechua study will fit in with your future academic and/or career goals.

  • A letter of recommendation from a faculty member

Personal interviews may be required of applicants who meet the minimum criteria. Awards will be determined by the selection committee.
