Facts about the Chair

Since its inauguration, the Chair has hosted several renowned Brazilian scholars. In 2000, Valter Sinder, professor at the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), served as the first Visiting Chair. Beatriz Jaguaribe, professor of comparative communications at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro served as Visiting Chair in 2001.

In 2002, these scholars were historian José Murilo de Carvalho of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro; political scholar José Antonio Giusti Tavares, affiliated with the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Lutheran University of Brazil, and the Centro Universitario La Salle; and anthropologist Lívia Barbosa, affiliated with the Federal Fluminense University-Niterói and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. In Spring 2003, Katia Lund (co-director of the internationally honored film Cidade de Deus) held the Chair. The Visiting Chair was held by renowned novelist and playwright Márcio Souza during the Fall 2003 semester. The Visiting Chair position for 2004 was occupied by Maria Helena Moreira Alves, Director of Institutional Relations for Viva Rio. Viva Rio is currently the largest NGO in Brazil.
