Projects in the Andean Region
Educational Partnership for Social Science Research
The Kellogg Institute, in partnership with the Instituto de Estudios Peruanos (IEP) and the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Administracion (IESA) in Caracas, is undertaking a project to build international linkages and support collaborative research on civic, administrative and economic reform in the Andean region.
A three-year, $100,000 Fulbright Educational Partnerships grant from the US Department of State is enabling Kellogg to host several Visiting Fellows from Venezuela and Peru starting in academic year 2003-04. The agenda includes travel to Venezuela and Peru by Notre Dame faculty to conduct research and foster scholarly interaction. In conjunction, Kellogg is also supporting research travel to Peru and Venezuela by University of Notre Dame PhD candidates.
The Andean Region: A Turbulent Zone
The Ford Foundation has provided funding for an international team of scholars from six countries to research the dilemmas facing democracies in the Andean countries. In July 2003, the Kellogg Institute and FLACSO-Ecuador co-sponsored a workshop in Quito on "Constitutional and Electoral Reforms and their Effects on the Political Systems in the Andean Countries."
The Ford Foundation project, directed by Faculty Fellow Scott Mainwaring, also funds travel for scholars from leading research centers in these countries to facilitate scholarly exchange within the Andean region.
Democracy, Peace and Human Rights in Colombia
From 2000 to 2003, the Kellogg Institute and two other centers at the University of Notre Dame--the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies and the Center for Civil and Human Rights--collaborated with the Colombian Commission of Jurists and the Inter-American Dialogue on this project funded by the Ford Foundation.
The project supported visiting fellowships for Colombian scholars at risk, as well as fellowships for Colombian graduate students in international peace studies and international human rights and practical training for Colombian human rights lawyers. The papers authored for a March 26-27, 2001 conference at Kellogg are the basis of a forthcoming book.
Archives and Empires
Kellogg Faculty Fellow Sabine MacCormack and Guest Scholar Catherine Julien are working together on this project to explore the cognitive and communication skills underlying the clash of empires in 16th-century Peru. Their research is supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
