Grad Students
Overview
Graduate students from both the Master programs in business administration and economics at the University of Guadalajara will receive instruction from faculty from the University of Notre Dame during the summers of 2005 and 2006. The various course modules taught by visiting Notre Dame faculty will be part of a specialty or minor area of concentration on small agricultural business, NAFTA and economic development.
In addition, during June and July of 2005 and 2006, student teams from both participating universities will work with representatives from a variety of organizations - such as the NGOs Fundación Mexicana para el Desarrollo Rural and Fundación Produce, the Association of Corn Agricultural Producers of the State of Jalisco, the Secretariat for Rural Development of the State of Jalisco, the Guadalajara Chamber of Commerce, the Society of Rural Producers, the Union of Ejidos, and the Association of Industrialist of the State of Jalisco - to facilitate the creation and/or improvement of small business units in the rural or urban centers of the economic region around Guadalajara.
Interns may, for example, create marketing strategies and financial models, implement accounting systems, and improve operation strategies for both microbusinesses and non-governmental business support organizations. An ultimate aim of these internships is to link the industrial and professional service sector in the region around Guadalajara into the purpose and goals of this project, thereby creating multiplier effects beyond the duration of the project.
Upon completing the internships, the student teams will return to Notre Dame for a three-day seminar/workshop in which they will analyze their experience. This follow-on training will examine how academic thought can be valuable in structuring (or transforming the structure of) an entrepreneurial venture, thus enabling students to connect their academic and practical training.
