Intramural Grants

Intramural grants are open to any faculty or staff member, student group, or unit within the ND community.  They support educational activities pertaining to international studies in the broader University community.  Ideally, they relate specifically to Kellogg Institute research themes.

Criteria

Kellogg Intramural Grants primarily fund research and educational activities. Requests to support student activities must make explicit the connection between the proposed activity and academic work or educational goals. Proposals by student groups must have a faculty or staff sponsor.

Grants are restricted to the University of Notre Dame academic community and are intended primarily (though not exclusively) for on-campus activities and events.

The grants are intended to support projects of an institutional or group nature rather than individuals' research.

Projects must be within the field of international studies or have a clear international dimension, and preferably relate to one of the Institute's five research themes. Proposals must clearly indicate the international dimension of the project and any relationship to Kellogg themes.

The Institute generally prefers to give grants to other units or groups within the University as seed money for start-up expenses. It will not usually fund an ongoing project for multiple years. Continual funding will normally be reserved for programs in which Kellogg is directly involved.

To Apply

—To apply for conference or workshop cosponsorship, follow the Proposal Guidelines for Conferences and Workshops. The Institute will provide a maximum of $5,000 to support research conferences organized by Notre Dame faculty members who are not Institute fellows.

—To apply for funding of activities other than conferences or workshops, submit a proposal which includes:

  • A clear description of the project and its objectives;
  • Specifics about the proposed activity (who? what? when? where? why?);
  • An itemized budget and budget justification. The budget should show both the full cost of the project and the amount requested from Kellogg, and should indicate whether Kellogg support is being requested for specific line items.
  • Likely sources of funding for the part of the budget not covered by Kellogg. The proposal should indicate what other groups are being approached for funding and how much funding has already been secured. You are required to notify the Kellogg Institute of any funding received from another source; in some cases, e.g., if duplicate funding is received, the Institute may adjust the award.

Proposal Submission

Intramural grant requests may be submitted at any time, but well in advance of the proposed activity. Proposals will be evaluated on a rolling basis. The Grants Committee usually meets only during the academic year, so please plan accordingly.

Please submit applications electronically to:

Sharon Schierling, Associate Director (sschierl@nd.edu).
