Learning In and Out of School: Education Across the Globe

Conference/Event Grant
Grant Year
2011-2012

This conference addresses some of the extraordinary varieties in the way humans learn, in and out of school, and sometimes in spite of school, in the contemporary world. Education—schooled or otherwise—is a major factor in the life of all the young, though the investment of the experts and novices in this education varies considerably.

This conference derives from a double panel that Blum had organized for the annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association in November 2011.  What transpired was that every one of the participants was eager to continue our interactions. Alone, each paper contributed something to our understanding, but collectively the scholars saw that they have something unique to add regarding a remarkably rich view of the variety of human learning. This conference will build on the previous panel.
