Faculty Residential Fellowships
The Kellogg Institute awards Faculty Residential Fellowships to enable Kellogg faculty fellows to undertake significant projects consistent with the Institute's research priorities. The Institute will not necessarily award a fellowship every year and only under exceptional circumstances will it be able to offer more than one.
Eligibility
Only members of the regular teaching and research faculty who are fellows of the Kellogg Institute are eligible for this program. Assistant professors may apply for faculty residential fellowships, but awards are contingent on their having passed third-year review before beginning the fellowship.
Applicants may not have had a paid leave in the previous two years, or a Kellogg Faculty Residential Fellowship in the preceding six years. Preference will be given to applicants who have a history of service to the Institute (applies to tenured faculty only).
Description
Projects funded by this program must be conducted in residence at Notre Dame. Proposals for field research outside the University and/or for projects that would entail other than brief absences of the faculty member during the fellowship period are not eligible. The faculty residential fellow will be expected to attend most seminars and other academic activities of the Institute, give at least one lecture about his or her current work, submit at least one research paper for publication as a Kellogg working paper, and accomplish the proposed program of research and/or writing.
The Faculty Residential Fellowship, which normally covers the recipient’s salary for one semester, allows a fellow the opportunity to apply for an academic leave from his or her department or college. While not a given, leave is usually granted. Consequently, during the fellowship period the fellow is relieved of teaching and/or administrative responsibilities. Note: the University does not regard the Kellogg Faculty Residential Fellowship as an external grant; it will not match one semester off with a Kellogg Faculty Residential Fellowship with another semester off.
Project Proposals
Preference will be given to proposals to: a) finish a book or a major research project; and b) collaborate on a project that the Institute is initiating or already has under way. Preference will also be given to applicants who have applied for external funding.
The Institute encourages projects that have the potential to generate or enhance cooperation with other sectors of the University, especially to help promote its international dimensions. Projects including more than one faculty fellow or a fellow and associate(s) from other universities or research institutes will be considered.
Please note that when making fellowship award decisions, the Institute will solicit proposal evaluations by scholars outside Notre Dame, in addition to consulting the references supplied by the applicant.
Amount of Award
The total Institute grant for each fellowship will not exceed the cost of one semester's salary.
